"audio.mp3" is your output MP3 audio file. ab 320k will ensure the MP3 is encoded with the highest possible bit rate of 320 kbps, to minimize the destruction as much as possible. ![]() However, since this solves the OP's solution but doesn't do as the title says, I'll also include the command line for actually performing a destructive lossy to lossy conversion with the best possible outcome: ffmpeg -i "video.mp4" -ab 320k "audio.mp3" "audio.m4a" is your output M4A audio file. sn is not necessary in this case, but I'll just mention it for completeness, to unmap any subtitle streams that may be present in the source container. dn does the same as -vn for metadata streams. vn unmaps the video stream to make sure the video also doesn't get copied, since we don't want the video in this case, and we definitely don't want it ending up in an audio-only M4A container. c:a copy is your audio codec option to copy the audio stream and not manipulate it in any other way. "video.mp4" is your input MP4 video file. An example of this using FFmpeg would be the following command line: ffmpeg -i "video.mp4" -c:a copy -vn -dn "audio.m4a" So, the best course of action in the OP's case is actually not to convert to an MP3, but rather stream copy the AAC into an M4A container, which is a completely lossless process without any destruction whatsoever. Any modern application that supports MP3 will also support AAC, and that also includes most podcast hosts and apps. In reality, every single suggestion here in the comments uses FFmpeg on the back end, all of the websites and even VLC (which uses the libavcodec and libavformat FFmpeg libraries), but with horribly generic parameters that will end up destroying the audio more than necessary, which is of particular concern since the MP4 audio stream we're starting with in this case is a lossy AAC stream.īy and large, there will never be an instance you need to actually "convert" an AAC stream to MP3, which would necessitate a destructive lossy to lossy conversion. I'll just tell everyone here and now and for posterity the absolutely best solution to this is by using FFmpeg directly. Resources /r/podcasting Wiki Related Subreddits Questions?
